My answer to a friend who declined an invite to join The Endup

For years--since the late '70s in the days of disco to the rave parties of the '90s and beyond--that's where friends and I would frequently end up after all-nighters or almost all-nighters. Yes, it's always been Tweaker Central (even with bodies found in the patio bushes over the years), and yet it's had some of the best new and visiting DJs, atmosphere (especially on the poop deck in the back patio where you can watch the sun rise), regulars and irregulars hanging out, and just great ambiance.

I was in the old EndUp tribe until the time when it looked like the EndUp was going to become history and be sold and demolished last year; the EndUp didn't die but that tribe did. So when the eponymous Endup person revived a tribe, I joined, and have enjoyed the photos, chat, and info on its schedule and upcoming attractions.

Don't hesitate joining if you're at all interested in this classic treasure of a S.F. club!

  • I always loved the patio, but I havn't found any bodies out there yet.
    • Oh! The most recent event was about two years ago when the ABC closed them down for awhile after an incident.
      • Ahhhhhh

        I love the mis information.

No bodies have been found dead onteh patio. Urban myth.

There was a shooting that lead to the closing of Club Dread. Club didn't close.

The only closure in teh 33 years of Endup was when the ABC came in and bought drugs off of a SFPD undercover. They walked in together, went up top to the balcony. Exchanged drugs and cash, and walked out together. That was the only way they could get the club.

The former chief of police for south station had a serious hard on for the club. He wante dto nail it one way or the other. Its' also suspected that he had a hand in the "Mysery" fire on teh third floor.

However, The Endup has endured. From Carls two brothers ownership and (mis)management to Carl retiring and passing teh torch to the newly formed Endup LLC who are now the owners.

They have done a fantastic job rennovating the place, made a VERY nice transition, and have used their resources and talents to draw in some BIG names of late. The closeout of 2005 was just a trial run and tehy're pulling out all stops for 2006.

I've seen some of the names that will be making a stop and they are five star top of the line acts that other clubs have been begging to play at their venues. We got'em, and they will be exclusive.

There will also be some new things to the Endup, such as and 80's all night party starting in January with two of the bay areas best award winning DJ's that will give you a night to remember.

The last Wed of this month will be a special night with Tortured Soul. If you saw them earlier this year you know what a dynamite performance they put on, and if you missed it, well, you really missed out.

Derrick Carter gave us the best anniversary party we could have hoped for, and don't be surprised if you see him drop by again in the near future.

Sunday T-dance has a new lineup, and a rotating schdule, so keep an eye here for the DJ times and performer line up.

        • Thanks for all of that! While I realize how urban myths proliferate, I was definitely part of a link there. I'd heard the "body in the bushes" story from at least a dozen (mis)informants, several of whom didn't know each other. I appreciate your openness and equanimity in responding!
          • I think that body was somebody who passed out then woke up on monday afternoon mid day. Staff missed them when locking up.

Another classic story was one staff memeber, on his 21st (ya, he was working there underage in the old days) was drunker than anything in his 21st.

He run to the front door, telling Filo "GET OUTTA THE WAY!!!" and launching patrons left and right in his atempt to get through teh door, ran to he bathroom and started banging on the door. Somebody was inside and he forcibly removed them without giving them a change to finish up and hereby began expelling EVERYTHING form his belly.

The next day they showed up to start prepping for that night, and somebody noticed the bathroom door closed and latched. They knew they were the only ones there, and when they looked over the door, there's the employee (security I might add) STILL passed out and hugging the shitting laying on the floor.

            Ahhhh.... the good old days.

We run a much tighter ship now.... but it's still good for a laugh.

            --S
            • Yep! I'm sure those are the incidents (or at least like the incidents) that blossomed into the urban myths my friends and I heard over the years!

So it's NOT "Tweaker cntral" anymore like it was for us from the late '70s thru the early '00s?
              • I take a viewpoint of "is this person maintaining?"

I can't control what peopel do outside of the club. I have to worry about what's inside the club. If I see somebody using or dealing drugs then they are ejected. No one customer is worth out licence and ability to be open. We always allow In's & Outs so there is no reason for somebody to do something in the club. If you're going to do something, do it outside and away from the club. If you get caught, it's not my or the clubs problem and you are responsible for your own actions.

However, if somebody is on something, and they are maintaining, it's not really my business. I'm not going to administer a drug test. If somebody is not able to maintain then they are either asked to leave, or I seek medical attention if I deem it needed. Bottom line I want all the customer to be safe, have fun, and be able to come back.

                It's pretty much that simple.

Are there tweakers? When you are open for almost for 36 hours straight, you're going to have tweakers and E-tards.

                --S
                • My, I like your understanding and articulate responses! And--I know from personal experience--some of those tweakers and E-tards have lasted as long as the Endup! And, natch, some have not!

P.S. Have you or anyone else reading this thread read that excellent novel "War Boy" (2000) by Kief Hilsbery, much of which is set at the Endup? he sure did his homework there, I remember hearing from the lady who used to do some of the booking there! (BTW, is she still there?)
